We realise you can't know exactly, especially without reading the assignment first, but we need to know if we can contact you for a short-notice pinch-hit in case of last minute dropouts. If you can create something in a week or two, that's awesome; if you can't, and need at least a month or more, that's still awesome. So please, be as brutally honest as you can about how long it'd take to fulfil a request should we need to ask you. <3

We will be capping the number of writers at 35. There will be no cap as to the number of artists.

We're accepting proxy sign-ups, so if you can't be here on July 12th, find someone who can post your sign-up for you. However you must edit (or reply to your placeholder comment) within 24 hours with the full sign-up, or we won't accept it. (In the interest of fairness, mods will not be acting as proxies)

There will be separate sign-up posts for writers and artists.

H/D ERISED 2023 REVEALS

Thank you so very much to all our amazing writers, artists, pinch-hitters, readers, commenters, and reccers who once again made this fest such an amazing success!

If you haven't had time to make it through all the fantastic works here yet, we hope that you'll still read and leave some love for our writers and artists! Comments are appreciated all year round! ;) As are commenters—like you amazing readers and participants, including the phenomenal 406 people who have left an incredible total of 1,750 comments on H/D Erised works this year—thank you for all you do to make this community what it is!! And a special shout-out, again, to our ever-expanding list of all-star commenters, who have commented on more than half (and sometimes way more!!) of this year’s works: blueheart_v, dothechachaslide, hsvh, khalulu, lq_traintracks, lumosatnight, QueenieJinny, Slowly_learning, and TheGoblinMatriarch!! Thank you!!!

We'll be going through the works today, revealing the authors on AO3, removing the mod account as a co-author, and adding the creator names to the tumblr headers. We'll be sending the participants a wrap-up email when we've finished with all the final admin things on our end.

Are you all super excited??? We sure are. We've had some absolutely wonderful submissions, and we can't wait to share them with you.

Remember, we're posting headers on our Tumblr, with weekly round-ups and the final masterlists posting on both tumblr and dreamwidth. All content will be hosted at our AO3 Collection, where you can also leave comments to let our amazing H/D Erised creators know how much you're enjoying their work.

A few quick reminders for our wonderful participants:

Please comment on your gift as soon as you can after it's posted. Your gifter put a lot of work into creating something extra special just for you, and they are likely waiting anxiously to see your reaction.

With that in mind, if you see your gift has posted, but you know you won't have time to read or view for 24 hours, it'd be awesome if you could leave a quick comment letting your gifter know, so they don't have to spend the next few days worrying.

We know that the holiday season is a busy one both in fandom and RL, so if you're going to be unable to access the internet for a period of time during posting, please let the mods know by sending us a quick email. We’ve already received a lot of excellent submissions, but we are still waiting on a few more. You can find our Rules and Guidelines here and our Submission Guidelines here if you need a quick refresher on how to submit your work. We also recommend having a look at our H/D Erised Style Guide.

If you don’t think you’ll be able to send us your finished work today (which we’re sure won’t be the case for any of you, because you’re wonderful like that), please email us immediately.

Think you'll make it? Yay!! You are awesome and we can't wait to see what you've created!! Please check out our Rules and Guidelines or our Submission Guidelines for a refresher on how to submit your work. We also recommend having a look at our H/D Erised Style Guide.

Worried you might not make it? Please send us an email now. If you are asking for an extension, remember to attach your WIP, include an estimate of your final word count, and specify how much additional time you think you'll need to complete your submission. We know that sometimes stuff happens and people need to drop or need a bit of extra time, but we really do need to hear from you if that's the case. Participants who disappear, decide that they can give themselves extensions without telling us, make us put loads of time into hunting them down, and/or give us the runaround are especially likely to find that they are not allowed to participate in future fests. Lastly, If we don't hear from you by the end of the 3rd we may need to assume that you've dropped from the fest and call in a pinch-hitter to take your place - so please, make sure to be in touch by or on November 3rd, even if it's not (yet) to send us your wonderful creation!!

Submission Information for the 2023 H/D Erised Fest

We've started getting some questions about headers and submission info, so here's the relevant information for the 2023 fest!!

Our full Rules and Guidelines page can be found here and our FAQ is here. We also recommend having a look at our H/D Erised Style Guide. All three have loads of information about submission and posting. For quick reference, here are the highlights!

Important dates
Fic and Art due: November 3
Posting starts: December 1

Submitting
On or before November 3, email your completed assignment as an attachment to the mods at hderised@gmail.com. Art must be in .jpg, .png, or .tif format. Fic must be in .doc, .docx, or .rtf format. Subject line: Submission - [your name] gift for [your giftee's name].

Authors: We cannot accept shared google docs or PDFs. If you are using google docs to write, you can go to: "File > Download as > Microsoft Word (.docx)" to get a downloadable, attachable word file.

Please make sure to check that you have attached the most recent version of your work before submitting. Please make sure that your document meets the requirements outlined below:

Work must be beta'd and suggestions from your beta must be addressed and should not remain in the document as comments or track changes.

Written work must either include no HTML coding or simple HTML coding as detailed in the Style Guide. Using more complex HTML, CSS, and workskins can compromise anonymity; it may be possible, but you must check with the mods first.

If you are submitting a chaptered work, all chapters must be in a single document, and you must clearly indicate the start of each new chapter. Please let us know in your submission email if you'd like us to upload your fic to AO3 in chapters.

Headers (available below!) must be included in submission emails. For authors, they must also be included at the top of the written work.

Author's and artist's notes can't compromise anonymity. We may ask creators to edit or wait to post their notes if they name frequent betas and cheerleaders (though initials are great!), reference inside jokes or specific events that may be recognizable to their readers, use the same language that's often used in their non-anonymous author's notes, link to social media accounts, etc.

While accessibility needs vary between readers and devices, we ask creators to avoid common accessibility pitfalls, like using long lines of asterisks as line breaks.

Getting an Extension
While we don't grant formal extensions until two weeks before the H/D Erised deadline—we've found that that gives creators and mods alike a much more realistic sense of where things are and how much time is needed—once that date has passed and it is looking like you'll need an extension, please email the mods. Note: discussions for extensions need to take place before November 3. If we haven't heard from you before or by the end of the 3rd and don't receive your completed work, we may need to assume that you have dropped and call in a pinch-hitter.

All emails requesting extensions must have your Work In Progress attached (not as a shared doc, please!) and must include an estimation of how much more time you'll need as well as your anticipated final word count. This goes for 2nd and 3rd extensions as well.

We will not grant extensions without a copy of your work as it stands so far. This goes for everyone, whether you've been in fandom for eons and have participated in a million previous fests or are a brand-spanking-newbie, and even if you've been the most reliable fest participant in all of fandom. Your WIP must be submitted as an attachment with the email asking for your extension. If it is art, it must be scanned or photographed, if it is fic it must be typed up. Please plan ahead to make sure that you can do this before making your request.

Decisions about extensions are based on whether they're feasible, whether they're necessary, whether they seem realistic, whether we've seen good progress, and whether communication has been open, consistent, and reliable. Please note that, given the number of moving pieces in an exchange fest, we may not be able to give you as much as an extension as you've requested; for instance, asking for a two-week extension does not guarantee that you will receive a two-week extension. If we determine that you may not be able to complete your work in time for the fest we may, unfortunately, need to drop you so that we can give a pinch-hitter as much time as possible.

We've just finished sending out assignments. You should have an email from us in your inbox. If not, please check your spam folder before telling us you haven't received it.

Please email us quickly to confirm that you have received your assignment <----- You MUST do this!

Also, an important reminder: PLEASE do not tell anybody—other than your beta(s)— who your recipient is or anything about the work you are creating. This extends to sharing brainstorming, outlines, snippets, excerpts, outtakes, screencaps of drafts, word counts, discussion of ideas/plot points/challenges, etc. on any platform at all during the creation period. If you share any information that might give away your identity, or any other creator's, before reveals, you may not be allowed to participate in future H/D Erised fests. We know this is a close community and you likely want to squee with your friends, but it's a lot more fun if you keep it a secret, we promise. And we don’t want anything to spoil the surprise for your (or anyone else’s!) giftee!!

Now get creating! We cannot wait to see what you come up with. :)

H/D Erised 2023 Pinch-Hitter Sign-Ups!

If you think there's a chance you can do a pinch-hit, please sign up! No one loves pinch hitters more than us. :D

You might not get an individual gift, but you'll earn the eternal gratitude of the mods. ♥

You can always decline when/if we contact you. However, in order to give us the best shot at finding you a great match if we need you, please think carefully about the following question in the sign-up form:

How long will you need to complete a pinch-hit?

We realise you can't know exactly, especially without reading the assignment first, but we need to know if we can contact you for a short-notice pinch-hit in case of last minute dropouts. If you can create something in a week or two, that's awesome; if you can't, and need at least a month or more, that's still awesome. So please, be as brutally honest as you can about how long it'd take to fulfil a request should we need to ask you. <3

Additionally, we do ask that you read the 2023 fest rules and guidelines (though we understand that pinch-hits usually need to come with exceptions to rules about deadlines and timelines!) and fill out the entire form, including the For the gift I'd like to receive: section. As mentioned above, you might not get an individual gift, but depending on how things work out, you never know, so it is helpful for us to have that information. :)

We will be capping the number of writers at 35.

We're accepting proxy sign-ups.

We're also accepting placeholder sign-ups. Meaning, if you're in a hurry/on your phone, you don't have to sign-up with the full sign-up form. You can comment with PLACEHOLDER FOR [NAME] but you must edit (or reply to your placeholder comment) within 24 hours with the full sign-up, or we won't accept it.

Sign-ups close on Thursday, July 20th (6PM EDT | 11PM BST) or after we receive 35 sign-ups.

Please Note: The format of this year's sign-up form is different from previous years. Please make sure you are using this year's version when you fill out your form.
